The SADC R&I management handbook is adopted as a framework for best practice in R&I management. It will accelerate promotion of R&I management as an institutional and national priority. It is a resource for individuals in R&I management and institutions/ organisations that want to grow R&I management.

2022 marks the 20th anniversary of existence of the Southern African Research and Innovation Management Association (SARIMA).
On the science, technology and innovation (STI) front, the 1996 White Paper on Science and Technology was introduced. More than 20 years have passed since then, and the global and local economies have seen major shifts. Rapid technological advancement and the Fourth Industrial Revolution (4IR) require updated STI policy responses for South Africa to thrive in this changing environment. The 2019 White Paper on Science, Technology and Innovation is therefore intended to position the national system of innovation (NSI) to increase the contribution of STI to addressing the socio-economic challenges faced by South Africa.
The commercialisation of research has never been more important as humanity faces some of its greatest challenges. From vaccines that protect us against COVID- 19 to technologies that offset and defer the consequences of climate change, the impacts and availability of these technologies are largely due to the commercialisation of research through a professional activity known as technology transfer, knowledge exchange or research commercialisation.
This Report was produced by the Department of Science and Innovation (DSI), the Southern African Research and Innovation Management Association (SARIMA), the National Intellectual Property Management Office (NIPMO) and KISCH IP.

Route 2 Market Guides
These guides that provide an overview of how medical devices and pharmaceutical products reach the market. Each booklet focuses on a specific sector/product type and highlights the key steps and considerations in bringing such a product to market in that sector – with an emphasis on the local South African context.
Guides were developed by the Department of Research Contracts & Innovation (RC&I) at the University of Cape Town with funding from the National Intellectual Property Office (NIPMO). Hardcopies of these publications may be obtained at cost by contacting innovation@uct.ac.za.
The South African National Survey of Intellectual Property and Technology Transfer at Publicly Funded Research Institutions was embarked on to establish a number of baseline indicators used to track overall activity in Intellectual Property (IP) management and Technology Transfer (TT) over the period 2008-2014.
This Report (first published in 2017) was produced through a joint effort between SARIMA, the Department of Science and Technology (DST), the National Intellectual Property Management Office (NIPMO) and the Centre for Science, Technology and Innovation Indicators (CeSTII).
The inaugural Survey of Intellectual Property (“IP”) and Technology Transfer (“TT”) activities of Public Research Institutions in the SADC region (excluding South Africa) was initiated in 2016 as result of the need to benchmark these activities across the region.
The survey was enabled through the partnership between SARIMA, the South African Department of Science and Technology (“DST”), and the SADC Secretariat, specifically through the funding support provided by the DST.
The report provides a robust analysis of the South African national system of innovation, key players and their functions, the SA legislative environment, the innovation performance of the country and framework conditions that support innovation cooperation between South Africa and The European Union.
This report was developed jointly by SARIMA and the Agency for the Promotion of European Research (APRE) under the ESASTAP PLUS project in 2015, funded by the EU’s seventh framework programme.
The report provides five case studies on innovation collaboration between South African and European research institutions and companies, highlighting challenges, drivers, successes and good practices, as well as, framework conditions for successful cross border innovation and related policy considerations.

Leaders in knowledge and technology transfer from 18 countries participated in a summit in 2018 to strategically analyse the evolution of the field, and its future. The traditionally narrow notion of technology transfer being about licensing of patents protecting an institution’s research, is evolving rapidly into an engagement across a range of outputs and outcomes, including supporting spin out formation and synergistic relationships with industry leading to innovation spinoffs. AUTM, the convenor of the Summit, issued the report on the two main themes unpacked: defining the profession, and measuring its impact on the world.
SARIMA has developed the Research and Innovation Management Handbook, consisting of two complementary modules, namely a module on Research Management (RM) and this module covering Technology Transfer/Innovation Management (TT/IM).
The module is structured as an e-handbook that is current, relevant and provides guidance in respect of TT/IM best practice, together with a list of information resources and tools for TT/IM management in southern Africa. Each chapter includes a set of guiding notes which can be treated as stand-alone sections but are also conceptually linked.
